Namesake
Mr. Gilbert Garcetti is an alumnus of 68th Street Elementary. His goal as a young adolescent was to work for the city’s sanitation department and become a trash man. (garbage collector) It was a Career Day at 68th Elementary School that changed the trajectory of young Gil’s life.

Mr. Garcetti has maintained a relationship with the students of 68th Street Elementary for more than a decade. When he learned that 68th Street Elementary had become a STEAM school, his foundation helped to establish a partner school with Cal Tech University and the California Science Center. He has visited our classrooms, shared his published art work, and most importantly, spoke about this journey into law, politics, photography, Harvard Faculty, his role as a UNESCO Cultural Ambassador, and his most beloved and proud role, father of our current Mayor, Eric Garcetti, his multitalented daughter Dana, and as the husband of his wife of 53, Sukey.

After leaving 68th Street Elementary, he went on to attend John Muir, Horace Mann, and Washington High School. He won an academic scholarship to attend USC and later went on to earn his law degree from UCLA before joining the District Attorney’s Office in 1968 where he remained for 32 years including 12 years as Chief Deputy District Attorney and as the elected District Attorney.

Mr. Garcetti began his career in law as a trial prosecutor. Twenty years later, in 1992, he was elected District Attorney of Los Angeles and served two years. He was later appointed to serve a five-year term on the Ethics Commission. In 2002, Garcetti was appointed to the Los Angeles City Ethics Commission for a 5-year term. He was also appointed a teaching fellow at Harvard’s University Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy Institute of Politics at John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Mr. Garcetti is also a professional photographer. He has had seven photography books published and has had photo exhibitions around the world. He is also a producer for the hit television shows “The Closer” and “Major Crimes”.

Today, we honor his legacy by renaming 68th Street Elementary as Gil Garcetti Learning Academy.
